Extensive workshop program to complement Brett Whiteley exhibition

DJ sessions, Sunday movie presentations and an artists’ studio bus tour are among the activities which will run alongside the upcoming Brett Whiteley exhibition at Logan Art Gallery.

Whiteley, one of Australia’s most celebrated artists, will go on display at the gallery on Saturday, July 20.

An extensive public art program will run throughout the exhibition.

The gallery will run up late sessions between 6pm and 8pm on alternate Thursday nights from July 25 and open from 10am to 2pm every Sunday during the Brett Whiteley exhibition.

The bus tour from 10am to 3pm on Saturday, August 3 will travel to the studios of photographer Christina Lowry, artist and arts educator Richard Blundell and tour Monte Lupo Arts’ ceramic studio, gallery and cafe at Eight Mile Plains.

Mayor Jon Raven said the exhibition is a chance for people to see some of Australia’s best artworks in their own backyard.

“We will be opening the gallery with extended hours on Thursday nights and Sundays for this amazing exhibition,” Cr Raven said.

“Make sure to book your tickets early and plan a day out in Logan – we have so many great parks and restaurants to visit before you head home.”

Art Gallery of New South Wales curator, Brett Whiteley Studio, Nick Yelverton said this new touring exhibition offers audiences a fascinating insight into the studio practice of one of Australia’s most gifted and revered artists.

“Whiteley is one of the most instantly recognisable names in Australian art,” Mr Yelverton said.

“This exhibition brings together some standout paintings as well as some lesser-known gems to give viewers a real sense of an artist at work.”

Before his death in 1992 at the age of 53, Brett Whiteley was a multiple winner of three of Australia’s premier art prizes.

He was awarded the Archibald Prize in 1976 and 1978, the Sir John Sulman Prize in 1976 and 1978 and the Wynne Prize in 1977, 1978 and 1984.

Brett Whiteley: Inside the Studio is on display at Logan Art Gallery from Saturday, July 20 to Sunday, September 8.

It will then travel to Perth, Orange and Ballarat.
