Eagleby Aquatic Centre update

End of an era for Eagleby Aquatic Centre

The Eagleby Aquatic Centre will be closed with Logan City Council to consult the community on a future use for the site.

The decision by Council follows a thorough workplace health and safety investigation at the site.

Council recognised that the Eagleby Aquatic Centre, which is currently closed for winter, has provided an important service to the local community for more than 30 years.

Due to ageing infrastructure the facility is now approaching the end of its life and will not be re-opened as scheduled later this year.

Mayor Darren Power said Council’s priority was ensuring City of Logan residents had access to safe, appropriate and well-resourced facilities.

The Eagleby Aquatic Centre was constructed by the former Albert Shire Council and expanded by Gold Coast City Council, before  becoming the responsibility of Logan City Council after the 2008 council amalgamations.

“This facility has provided a wonderful service for the Eagleby community for many years but it is tired and dated and the time has come to close it down,” Cr Power said.

“Council assets become outdated over time and this facility has experienced several issues over many years.

“While this is the end of an era for Eagleby Aquatic Centre, Council is continuing to invest in new aquatic facilities for the City of Logan community, with plans for the redevelopment of the nearby Beenleigh Aquatic Centre well underway.”

Division 12 Councillor Karen Murphy, who advocated for the reopening of the centre, said while Council’s decision was disappointing, she is committed to consulting with the community about possible future uses for the site.

“Today’s decision was not the outcome I wanted for the Eagleby community, which has used this facility for many years,” Cr Murphy said.

“However, I will work with the community on a masterplan for the site, which will meet the future needs of local families.

“Council will reach out to residents, sporting organisations and schools in due course to ask for their ideas and feedback on the redevelopment of this important community site.”

Council’s swimming pool facilities include:

  • Beenleigh Aquatic Centre (City Rd, Beenleigh)
  • Bethania Aquatic Centre (Station Rd, Bethania)
  • Logan West Aquatic Centre (Wineglass Dr, Hillcrest)
  • Gould Adams Park Aquatic Centre (Kingston Rd, Kingston)
  • Logan North Aquatic Centre (Sports Dr, Underwood)
