A berry fun day out
There’s nothing quite like eating strawberries you’ve harvested yourself, or watching the kids discover the joy of freshly-picked fruit.
Did you know one of the region’s most popular pick-your-own-strawberry experiences is right here in the City of Logan?
From July to November, the Chambers Flat Strawberry Farm comes alive with locals and visitors. It’s been a popular destination now for more than two decades and is a labour of love for husband and wife team Laura and Pieter Hendriksen.
Both coming from migrant families who worked the land, Laura and Pieter were keen to take up farming together. Laura had been around strawberries all her life – her grandmother grew strawberries for Cottees Jams and her parents were also growers – so it seemed the logical crop to try.
They used some of Pieter’s grandmother’s land to get started and, in 1985, bought their first property in Park Ridge. They later bought land in Stanthorpe to have a second growing location and extend their annual strawberry season.
In 2000, the couple bought the Chambers Flat Road property that locals know and love. Around that time, the pick-your-own experience was becoming popular and they decided to give it a try.
It proved hugely popular, especially with parents looking for somewhere outdoors to take their children.
“I love watching the kids have fun picking the strawberries,” Laura says. “Sometimes they have a little taste and you see their faces with all the juice running down their chin.”
Self-harvested strawberries are weighed and charged per kilo at the farm shop. There are also pre-packed punnets, jams, dipping sauces, and chocolate coated strawberries on sticks.
When the crops are ripe and plentiful (generally from around late July to November), picking is open from 8:30am to 4:30pm daily. The shop is open seven days a week from June to November.
