Cultivating the arts in Loganholme
All are welcome at Gerrard’s Performing Arts Centre in Loganholme – even if you have a wheelchair or just two left feet.
Born out of passion, the center is the brainchild of sisters Heather Barraclough and Hayley Iffland, both of whom have danced for more than 15 years.
‘I love how it’s an art form that can be used to tell a story to an audience,’ Hayley says.
For Heather, it was a newfound source of happiness and confidence.
The centre provides an inclusive and supportive space for all types of dancers, from elite to beginner.
‘We wanted to create a hub for the arts and for the greater community at all skill levels, right here in Logan,’ Heather says.
‘People always comment on how welcome they feel and how there’s no judgement in our classes. We really focus on breaking down steps to manageable chunks and it works – people feel they learn more easily here.’
There are classes for everyone: traditional and contemporary dance genres like jazz, tiny tots dance and adaptive classes for those who require a carer.
The duo currently run adult classes for Logan City Council’s Active and Healthy program and will be hosting a seniors’ session at Connect 4 Seniors Picnic in the Park.
‘Dance is so impactful because it’s an outlet from a busy world with lots of stress,’ Heather says.
‘It also helps children and adults learn in a different way, because it makes you feel things deeply. It’s also a great physical activity, especially for seniors in terms of mobility.
‘We even seen those struggling with mental health really come out of their shell in terms of confidence.’
Hayley says they strive to serve as mentors rather than instructors.
‘We know everyone, and we know their stories, so people really love coming here because they feel like they belong,’ she says.
‘We’re like a family here at GPAC.’
