Around the world in a day without leaving Logan

A bustling weekly farmers market, thriving multicultural hubs and culinary precincts created  by a diverse population – welcome to the City of Logan.

Get to know a few of the 234 cultures found in our city through food from across the globe and beautiful sacred architecture. We’ve compiled an immersive one-day itinerary for locals and visitors to experience the heart and soul of our diverse city.

Start your day off on the right foot at some of the best breakfast establishments around. If you’re exploring on a Sunday and are a fan of markets, check out the Global Food Markets in Woodridge. There are more than 100 stallholders, with plenty of produce and Cambodian, Burmese, African, Middle Eastern and Indian cuisine. If you’d prefer cafe seating and breakfast with an Asian twist, go to Underwood.

At Bake It, you’ll find exquisitely fluffy Korean ‘chubby doughnuts’ and honey-butter bread, a thick cut of house-made milk bread caramelised with butter, honey and toffee sauce. Across the street is another breakfast institution, Jian Bing Club, which serves up savory Chinese breakfast crepes with fillings like sausage, fried chicken and pork floss. If you’re after something lighter, Korean-owned Ant Coffee is located in the same complex with dishes like the salmon bap bowl, which comprises of a bed of black rice with toppings like sashimi grade salmon, avocado, kimchi and edamame.

Once your belly is full, it’s time to check out some of the most beautiful sacred sites in our city. Temples provide us with the opportunity to interact with and learn something new about our city’s rich cultural identity. These breathtaking temples also teach us a thing or two about art and history and most importantly, are free and open to all.

Step back in time at Priestdale’s majestic Fo Guang Shan Chung Tian Temple, home to practising Buddhists and rich wildlife. This temple is a branch of Fo Guang Shan, an international Chinese Mahayana Buddhist organisation that aims to share culture, educate others and give back to society. Here you’ll find first century architecture, dragon gargoyles, shrines and a well-kept garden. Take a walk through the ornate alleys, check out the gift shop or stop for some tea and vegetarian food at the teahouse. The temple also hosts special annual events like Buddha’s Birth Day which draws crowds of thousands.

Address: 1034 Underwood Rd, Priestdale

Head to Australian Centre for Unity Slacks Creek Mosque for a glimpse into Islamic practice. The centre, where all are welcome, also serves as a community centre to promote unity among Australians. Don’t forget to take a moment to check out the prayer room and its  elaborate Turkish carpets.

Address: 16 Queens Rd, Slacks Creek

The Khmer Buddhist Temple is a must-see to experience Cambodian culture and Theravada Buddhism in Marsden. Theravada Buddhism differs from Mahayana Buddhism as it emphasises core Buddhist teachings to break the cycle of reincarnation. The temple showcases classical Khmer architecture with its pillars, tiered roof and spire design, painted in rich shades of red, green and gold. It’s a great place to stroll and admire the Buddhist statues and art.

Address: 44 Third Ave, Marsden

Head down to South Maclean on Mount Lindesay Highway, where you’ll catch a glimpse of the distinctive Sri Selva Vinayakar Koyil (Ganesha Temple). This temple is dedicated to Ganesha, the Hindu god of prosperity and success. It’s impossible to miss this breathtaking temple and its stepped pyramid design – take a closer look and you’ll realise each tier features numerous Hindu deities.

Address: 4915-4923 Mount Lindesay Hwy, South MacLean

It’s time for lunch! Head back to Logan Central and the Croydon Road Precinct, where you’ll find a plethora of restaurants, markets, and services. Try a fermented tea leaf salad from Myanmar at Rua Haung Cafe, snack on the famous flatbread from Hamid Bakery or sip on a cup of authentic Vietnamese coffee at Vietnamese Pure Coffee as you take in the sights. This neighbourhood is well-known for its multi-ethnic population and unique culinary offerings, so you won’t leave hungry.

There’s also plenty to explore at this precinct, from African markets where you’ll find unique beauty products and accessories, to an Afghan supermarket that also sells a range of ceiling-to-floor luxurious Iranian carpets.

Check out the complete Croydon Road Precinct area guide for more information on how to eat like a local and where to shop.

You’ll probably be hungry again once you finish browsing. Before you head home, we recommend checking out one of the many authentic Asian eateries in our city where you can explore Asia’s rich history, culture and ingenuity. Asian food here is as authentic as it gets – try Southeast Asian momo dumplings, classic Japanese cuisine like katsudon or dishes like Korean marinated raw crab for more adventurous diners.
