Court celebrations for Twin Rivers croquet

Dreams of delivering a local boost to the sport of croquet are now becoming a reality for Eagleby’s Twin Rivers Community Mallet Sports Club.

Croquet is sometimes described as a cross between golf, lawn bowls, snooker and chess.

Mallets are used to hit balls through small square-topped hoops, with some plays becoming extremely tactical. It can be played by people of all ages.

The sport has been quietly growing in the City of Logan and is now poised for an exciting boom in popularity following the opening of 2 new competition lawns at the club’s Bedford Park headquarters.

The new courts complement 2 existing courts, while the facility also includes a site for a future clubhouse.

Construction of the new courts was co-funded by Logan City Council, the Division 12 Local Infrastructure Program and a grant through the Queensland Government’s Active Game Day program.

Division 12 Councillor Karen Murphy says the additional courts will help create an even stronger connection between the club and the local community.

‘Since being founded in 2010, the Twin Rivers Community Mallet Sports Club has led the way in making their sport available to people of all ages,’ Cr Murphy says.

‘These new courts will allow the club and its members to continue to boost local interest in croquet and do our community proud in competition at all levels.’

Club President Maia McGhee says the additional courts will allow Twin Rivers to host competitions with other clubs and expand their social play program.

‘Having 4 courts is a dream come true for our club,’ Maia says.

State Member for Macalister, Melissa McMahon MP, says encouraging people of all ages to get more involved in activities funded by Active Game Day grants is an investment in the future health and well-being of the community.

‘These new courts in the heart of Eagleby provide an ideal local opportunity to get involved in a healthy outdoor activity, while also meeting new friends within our community,’ she says.
