Netball leader scores Volunteer Of The Year Award

Logan City Netball Association (LCNA) was thanking its lucky stars when Karlene Marechal came to the rescue to step in as club president recently.

Without the local mother taking on the strategic role for the sporting association, the club with a 50-year history was facing the grim reality of shutting down its Ewing Park base in Woodridge – leaving hundreds of local netball players of all ages without their regular dose of afterschool and weekend activity.

Karlene’s efforts have made LCNA a welcoming and supportive place for players and families alike – and her efforts have been recognised with the 2025 Volunteer Of The Year award by Logan City Council.

Judges saw Karlene as being instrumental in the success of the ‘Containers for Change’ initiative, which raised funds for the association to purchase new equipment, all the while supporting an important environmental cause.

They also acknowledged Karlene’s focus to make netball affordable and inclusive.

As LCNA President, Karlene has worked tirelessly to ensure that children from all backgrounds, regardless of skill level or financial situation, have the chance to participate in sport.
