Flood fightback drives tournament triumph

Windaroo Lakes Golf Club has cemented its status as one of the City of Logan’s premier sports facilities after hosting a seventh consecutive Queensland PGA Associate Championship in June – despite facing major flood setbacks only months earlier.

The tournament, which featured a pro-am followed by 4 rounds of elite competition, showcased the club’s immaculate course presentation which was the result of tireless efforts by dedicated ground staff.

‘It’s hard to believe just a few months earlier, large parts of the course were under water from flooding caused by Cyclone Alfred,’ Division 4 Councillor Nathan St Ledger says.

‘I had the pleasure of playing in the pro-am and got to see firsthand how hard the club and its staff worked to get the greens and fairways back to championship standard.’

The tournament was won by Queenslander Damon Stephenson (Parkwood), earning him a place on an illustrious tournament honour board that includes golfing greats such as Greg Norman and Rod Pampling.

Windaroo Lakes Golf Club Director Kevin Dilks thanked tournament naming sponsor Zigcrete Constructions and the event’s 20 other sponsors. He also acknowledged the vital support of Logan City Council for the seventh year running.

‘Without their generous support, a tournament of this scale simply wouldn’t happen,’ Mr Dilks says.

‘We weren’t expecting to have to battle back from a flooded course, but everyone connected with the club worked extremely hard to deliver a premier tournament that brings great value not just to Windaroo Lakes, but also to the broader Logan community.’

The championship has been secured for at least another 2 years at Windaroo Lakes Golf Club.
