Get Ready for extreme weather, Logan

Logan City Council is encouraging local residents and businesses to prepare for the summer storm season, during Get Ready Queensland Week 2025 (October 6 to 12).

The Bureau of Meteorology’s long-range forecast is predicting above average rainfall for October to December, and the Logan community can take some simple steps to keep safe.

Mayor Jon Raven says ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred’s impact on South East Queensland and northern New South Wales earlier this year showed the importance of being ready.

‘For many people, it was their first experience with a cyclone,’ Mayor Raven says.

‘But it was a good reminder that we should be prepared for extreme weather at any time.

‘When you know how to keep your family, pets and property safe, you can respond faster when storms, floods and fires happen.’

Get Ready Queensland Week is a statewide campaign held each October ahead of Queensland’s disaster season to help communities prepare for extreme weather including cyclones, floods, bushfires and storms.

Residents are reminded to:

  • Understand your risks by knowing how disasters could affect your family, pets and property.
  • Prepare a household emergency plan – including whether you can stay home or would need to evacuate, where you would go and what would you take.
  • Have an emergency kit with essential supplies (food, medication, nappies, water etc) in case you lose power, water, or gas, or cannot get supplies from the shops for several days.
  • Keep your property well maintained (clean gutters, trim trees, make sure loose items are secured etc).

Council is also preparing for the months ahead, with staff participating in simulated disaster exercises later this month and training in evacuation centre management wrapping up this week.

Mayor Raven says 25 Council staff volunteered to train in evacuation centre operations.

The trained staff set up a mock evacuation centre – including bedding and food supply – at Logan West Community Centre at Hillcrest on Wednesday in an exercise called Operation Safe Haven.

‘Under Queensland’s disaster arrangements, our Council plays a vital role during an emergency,’ Mayor Raven says.

‘This training is another way to make sure we can support our city quickly.’

Operation Safe Haven also involved the Australian Red Cross, State Emergency Service and Queensland Police Service representatives.
