Bird art honours our wildlife
Self-confessed ‘bird nerd’ Christina Lowry is soaring to new heights with her new exhibition at Logan Art Gallery, opening 18 July.
The Rochedale South award-winning fine artist, 43, says her latest work, Ex Libris, was informed by pieces in collaboration with one of Australia’s most well-known and innovative contemporary artists, Fiona Hall AO.
‘Fiona is a role model of mine and the time I spent with her was invaluable,’ Christina says.
‘It helped inform my work and helped me create this exhibit. It was a dream come true.’
Her exhibition was helped along by a $7,650 grant she received from the Logan Regional Arts Development Fund run by Logan City Council, which allowed her to travel to New South Wales and learn from Fiona.
Christina used part of the funds to host free workshops across South East Queensland, on how to make simplified bird skull forms from clay.
‘These skulls will be part of Ex Libris, which focuses on endangered and vulnerable birds in Logan,’ Christina says.
‘As an act of reciprocity with nature, each bird created will serve as a gesture of offering.’

Christina’s exhibition will also feature non-remnant taxidermy bird forms (meaning no animal remains are inside), which she enjoys creating.
‘Through this exhibition I’m hoping to help people realise that being aware is a pathway to caring, with those who have made skulls being a part of something larger – an art piece that aims to raise awareness and honour the wildlife around us,’ she says.
Ex Libris is at Logan Art Gallery from 18 July to 6 September, and attendees can buy the clay bird skulls for $10.
All proceeds will go to the Australian Conservation Foundation.
