Jake Murdoch making waves in the music world

Jake Murdoch making waves in the music world

Jake Murdoch has had a big year – he released his first EP of self-penned songs in September, he’s gearing up for his debut appearance at the Tamworth Country Music Festival in 2022 and he’s spending every weekend at local gigs around Logan and the Gold Coast.

Another thing – he’s just 12 years old.

The talented pre-teen has been playing music since he was five years old.  Even before that, he was no stranger to the arts, having starred in a number of commercials before turning his hand to music.

Now, the multi-instrumentalist – who can play 13 instruments, including slide and bass guitar, piano, drums, harmonica, banjo – has set his sights high, with his ultimate ambition to play at Wembley Stadium.

“Wembley Stadium is where most of the people whose music I love have played some of their best shows,” he says, adding his musical influences range from Buddy Holly to Dire Straits and Status Quo.

“I listen to anything from the 40s through to current music,” he says.

“It’s what has always played in my house, that my mum listens to – and it’s my favourite as well.”

Sharing his love of music with his family is something Jake enjoys too – as he performs live at the monthly line dancing class which mum Natalie teaches at Veresdale Scrub Dance Hall.

“I like making my own songs, and it’s very relaxing to play guitar in my room and just forget about all of the other stuff.”

Jake’s EP, Jakeycakes, was released in September and features 6 blues, rock and country songs.

Jake says that while he has big ambitions, one of his favourite things is the creative process – just him and his guitar.

“I like that at any time I can just pick up my guitar or any instruments at any time and play,” he says.

“I like making my own songs, and it’s very relaxing to play guitar in my room and just forget about all of the other stuff.”

This is when Jake often finds inspiration for his songs, which he writes himself.

There should be plenty of inspiration for future songs in the next year, with the upcoming performance at Tamworth and a goal to record a country rock album.

Jake is endorsed by Pro Music Australia, and has also recently been endorsed by Japanese guitar brands Aria and Takamine.

It’s a lot for a young musician – but Jake takes it all in stride.

“I don’t really think about being nervous and stuff – I just like that I get to play my music and hopefully people like it too,” he says.

You can follow Jake on InstagramFacebook, YouTube and Twitter, and find his music on SpotifyApple Music and Soundcloud. His website is www.jakemurdochmusic.com.
