1100 reasons not to post illegal signs

The signs are not looking good for illegal advertisers and their roadside visual pollution.

Division 2 Councillor Teresa Lane says a blitz by Council’s Rapid Response Taskforce saw more than 1,100 illegally placed business advertising signs confiscated from power and light poles, traffic lights, street signs, road safety fences and other infrastructure.

‘The worst business offenders are roof restoration companies whose signs make our neighbourhoods look messy,’ Cr Lane says.

‘They have little to no investment in keeping our areas tidy and splatter these signs everywhere, creating visual pollution and safety risks for pedestrians.’

The Taskforce is not targeting the odd garage sale or school fete sign, but residents are urged to remove these once the event has concluded.

‘Our Rapid Response Taskforce is doing a great job in removing unwanted and unnecessary signs and taking action to stop those placing signs that create hazards for our community. Fines apply to those who repeatedly flout the law,’ Cr Lane says.

‘You can’t just throw up a sign wherever you want – Council will remove illegal signs without notice.’

The Taskforce also removes burntout or dangerous vehicles and abandoned shopping trolleys. It operates across the city with 80 percent of jobs being proactive.
