The importance of reading to children was a community-engaging theme at the recent Eagleby Little BIG Day Out hosted by Wesley Misson Queensland.
Division 12 Councillor Karen Murphy was among guests who read to some of the more than 450 children and their families at the annual event at the Eagleby Neighbourhood Centre.
Free books, provided by Logan City Council, were handed out.
The Eagleby Little BIG Day Out has its origins in early learning studies which showed many local children were under-prepared for school.
‘There are many ways to get young children more engaged in their education and reading to them regularly is one of the best methods,’ Cr Murphy says.
‘It was wonderful to see so many young bright eyes and beaming smiles as we showed them that learning through reading can be fun and enjoyable.’
Organiser Pania Taramai says the free Little BIG Day Out allows local families to enjoy a fun day out without the stress of paying for food and show rides.
‘Everybody has equal access to everything on offer while also receiving important messaging about the importance of our early learning years,’ Pania says.
