Gallery’s 30th anniversary celebrations shine light on Logan

Images from Logan Art Gallery’s collection will be brought to life through a night-time lighting spectacular to celebrate its 30th anniversary.

The images will be projected on the front of the gallery on Friday, 18 July, and Saturday, 19 July, as Logan City Council marks 3 decades of presenting art to the community.

The gallery opened in Logan Central in 1995 as a community-based initiative to provide a dedicated space to showcase local artistic talent.

The building had previously been home to the local library but has since shared the diverse practices of visual artists, craft workers and designers.

Mayor Jon Raven says Logan Art Gallery has cemented itself as a hub of creativity in the City of Logan over the past 30 years.

‘Our gallery has exciting art on display, showcasing the best of local and touring artists,’ Mayor Raven says.

‘We’ve also built up an amazing permanent collection that reflects the diversity of Logan.’

Mayor Raven says Council’s commitment to culturally-focused programs have been recognised by 6 Gallery and Museum Achievement Awards over the years.

‘Last year we hosted a major exhibition from the Art Gallery of New South Wales focused on one of Australia’s most celebrated artists, Brett Whiteley,’ he says.

‘We were the only Queensland gallery – and one of only 4 in Australia – to host this exhibition.’

The 30th Anniversary Spectacular is happening from 5 pm to 8 pm on the Friday and between 10 am and 8 pm on the Saturday, featuring a full program of creative activities for people of all ages, and especially families.

Friday’s program celebrates the opening of 5 new exhibitions, the spectacular outdoor projection and courtyard light installation, with lantern and bead making workshops available for the kids.

Saturday’s program will offer hands-on opportunities for participants including workshops in lantern making, tote bag printing, Love Logan canvas painting, snow globes and kaleidoscopes.

An entertainment program will also run with performances by musicians, DJs and experimental sound artists including the local musical duo Edgy and Hedgy.

Logan Art Gallery is on the corner of Jacaranda Avenue and Wembley Road, Logan Central.
