It’s like finding treasure for AFL club

The Pirates are on their way to Yarrabilba as sport continues to grow in this booming suburb.

The ovals at McKinnon Park North will be the new home for AFL club Park Ridge Pirates, which will rebrand to Logan City Pirates.

Division 4 Councillor Nathan St Ledger says Council has offered a 2-year lease to the Pirates for the 2-field facility in McKinnon Drive, located opposite Yarrabilba State Secondary College.

‘There is such a strong appetite for sport in Yarrabilba and surrounding areas and Council is determined to support all codes to help create healthy lifestyles,’ Cr St Ledger says.

‘That’s why I am extremely pleased that we will have a locally based club to cater for those who want to play or watch AFL footy.

‘The Pirates have been based in Logan for more than 15 years and that experience is a perfect fit for an emerging and growing community like Yarrabilba.

‘Going forward, Council will be working with the club to explore options which could see additional facilities added to this important sporting precinct.’

The Pirates club, which has more than 300 members this season, is currently based at Park Ridge High School.

Club President Daniella Greig says Council’s support of the Pirates is ‘club-saving’.

‘After a tough couple of years, it had gotten to do-or-die for us in our current situation,’ Daniella says.

‘Having this new facility is like a rebirth for the Pirates and the potential now to grow and get stronger on and off the field is phenomenal.

‘Everyone at the club is excited about the future and we thank Cr St Ledger and Council for their support.’
