Living tribute to Queen’s Jubilee
A leafy lane of native trees is leading bushwalkers to the Logan River at the Cedar Grove Environmental Centre.
Lemon-scented gums (corymbia citriodora) and silver wattles (acacia podalyrilfolia) now line the pathway of the environmental park in honour of Queen Elizabeth II, who passed away in September last year.
The Cedar Grove Landcare project received $19,000 from the Australian Government’s Planting Trees for The Queen’s Jubilee program.
Seventy trees were planted along what will be known as the Queen’s Jubilee Tree Alley.
The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee was celebrated in February 2022, marking her 70th year on her throne.
Incorporating wattle at Cedar Grove is an apt choice. Golden wattle is Australia’s national floral emblem and, in a nod to that, the Queen wore a wattle-coloured dress during her first visit to Australia in 1954.
Division 9 Councillor Scott Bannan says the trees are a brilliant addition to the environmental centre.
‘It will be great for our regular bushwalkers and other visitors to the Cedar Grove Environmental Centre to see these trees grow and thrive over time,’ Cr Bannan says.
‘I congratulate Cedar Grove Landcare on a fantastic project that not only honours our late Queen, but also provides important habitat for local wildlife.’
A commemorative plaque has also been installed at the site.
