Logan's pool safety heroes prepare for summer
Logan City Council is reminding pool owners and parents to be safe this summer swim season.
City of Logan Mayor Jon Raven says safe pools save little lives.
‘There’s nothing better than spending time in the pool when it’s hot,’ Mayor Raven says.
‘We’re a young city, and lots of Logan families love to go for a splash in their own pools, or those owned by family or friends.
‘We want everyone to stay safe this summer, which means we all have a responsibility to be pool safe.’
It is compulsory for pools and spas, including portable and inflatable pools, to have a compliant fence or barrier.
Property owners should:
- check the current standards for pool and spa barriers
- make sure their pool fence is a minimum of 1.2 metres high and in good condition
- ensure there are no climbable objects such as pot plants or chairs, both outside and inside the fence
- keep gates closed and not prop them to stay open
- display the latest CPR sign on their fence
- learn CPR.
Portable and inflatable pools need a building works permit, pool safety certificate and a compliant fence if they hold water more than 300 mm deep or more than 2,000 litres or have a filtration system.
Parents and other carers should also know CPR and always supervise their children when they swim.
Jimboomba’s Burton family has made sure their backyard pool is safe for summer.
‘We love to have our friends over to swim in the pool,’ mum Kate says.
‘It’s really important to us that our fence complies, and we always have someone supervising, especially when there’s younger kids or not-so-confident swimmers in there.’
