Resuscitation medals for heroic staff
When a person collapsed at Mount Warren Sports and Fitness Centre last year, 2 Logan City Council staff members sprang into action, and their courage and quick thinking saved a life.
Aaron Sprigg and Mary Joy have now been formally recognised for their heroic actions, receiving the prestigious Australian Resuscitation Club Medal at a ceremony hosted by the Governor of Queensland on 3 February 2026.
Their calm response, teamwork, and commitment to community safety ensured a positive outcome in a critical moment.
The nominations for Aaron and Mary were made through the Royal Life Saving Society Australia (RLSSA), with all submissions reviewed by a national honours committee.
Both nominations were accepted, with the committee recognising their professionalism, clinical skills, and decisive actions during a high-pressure emergency.
City of Logan Mayor Jon Raven praised the staff members for their professionalism and commitment to community safety.
‘Aaron and Mary saved a life. Their quick-thinking and selfless actions have meant a family, and our community, have avoided what would have been a tragic loss,’ Mayor Raven says.
‘Moments like this highlight the importance of training and emergency preparedness.
‘Having up-to-date CPR and first aid skills is something we can all do.’
Aaron Sprigg says receiving the award was humbling.
‘We were focused on doing what needed to be done in that moment,’ he says.
‘To be recognised like this is an honour, but the real reward is knowing someone went home to their family.’
Mary Joy says the experience reinforced the importance of first aid and resuscitation training.
‘This experience highlighted the importance of regular training and teamwork put into action, with every individual contributing to a positive outcome,’ she says.
‘I feel immense gratitude that I was able to be there when it mattered – both as a person and as a professional.’
Logan City Council continues to prioritise staff training and emergency preparedness to ensure public safety across the city.
