Youth Centre delivers so much in its first year

The Wilbur Street Youth Centre in Logan Central is celebrating its first anniversary.

Division 2 Councillor Teresa Lane says so many goals and great outcomes have been achieved in its first 12 months of operation.

The Wilbur Street Youth Centre, in Wilbur Street, offers after-school and school holiday activities for students aged 12-18. Later in the evening, activities are offered for young adults aged 18-24.

‘This space is a game changer for our community,’ Cr Lane says.

‘Jim (Federal Treasurer and the Member for Rankin Jim Chalmers), Cameron (State Member for Woodridge Cameron Dick) and myself are regular visitors to the Youth Centre and see what a difference it makes for young people in our local community.’

Some milestones for the year:

  • More than 40,000 individual visits to the Youth Centre in 12 months.
  • Highest daily attendance of 232 students in one afternoon.
  • 92 per cent of students say the Youth Centre is a safe space for them.
  • 91 per cent of students have had conversations at the centre about their future.
  • 100 per cent of students who participated in dance or art activities say they want to do it again.
  • More than 10,000 small meals dispensed to students at the Youth Centre.
  • Parents checking out the centre to see what’s on offer.
  • 100 per cent of staff at the Wilbur Street facility are volunteers including the manager.

Research shows the majority of students who attend the Youth Centre are from Woodridge, Kingston, Logan Central, Marsden, Slacks Creek, Loganlea, and Berrinba.
