A need for speed...eating

For those with a need for speed eating, the Mosaic Pizza Challenge is back and bigger than ever in its fifth year.

The challenge is simple: eat an entire pizza faster than anyone else onsite at the Shailer Park establishment.

As soon as the timer starts, participants will chow down until nothing is left in their pizza box.

Mosaic Pizza owner Louis Oberleuter was initially looking to create some buzz around the restaurant.

‘We noticed there were no pizza challenges, so we went through with the concept and ended up getting lots of interaction and community support,’ he says.

The competition, which is sponsored by Nathan Strudwick of Elders Real Estate, Perfect Italiano and Commercial Kitchen Company, features a $500 first place prize.

Last year’s champion, James Webb – a world record-breaking competitive eater who flew in from Sydney – finished a pizza in 66 seconds.

‘I wanted it to be popular, but I didn’t think the event would ever get to the national stage with Channel 9 coming in to broadcast it live,’ Louis says.

‘We’re very thankful and blessed that we’ve got a brand.’

Participants of any age are welcome to join in and feast, with a juniors-only event running on the same day.

‘The best part is just seeing the joy of the people involved – we’re all just having fun with something that’s a little bit silly,’ Louis says.

If you know someone who’s up for the challenge, register now on the Mosaic Pizza website.
