2023 River Health Report Card released

Love for local rivers runs deep

A thriving appreciation for the City of Logan’s two major waterways has been reflected in this year’s river health report card issued by Healthy Land and Water (HLW).

The annual report provides insights on the environmental condition and benefits of waterways across South East Queensland.

It found high numbers of local residents were satisfied with the usability and accessibility of the Logan and Albert Rivers.

Around half of them said they participated in recreational activity in or alongside their local waterway at least once a month.

Walking, running, recreational fishing, and picnicking were among favoured activities.

The annual HLW report also highlighted improved conditions in both major rivers.

The Albert River soared from fair to a very good rating following a decrease in pollutant loads and significantly improved estuarine water quality.

The Logan River went from poor to fair environmental condition, with the report noting a significant decrease in pollutant load and improved estuarine water quality.

Environment Chair Councillor Jon Raven said the report highlighted the value the community places on the city’s rivers.

“I love to see data that confirms just how much our residents use and enjoy the Logan and Albert Rivers,” Cr Raven said.

Logan City Council supports a range of low-cost environmental events and activities that encourage residents to strengthen their connection with the environment, including local waterways.

Programs include the popular Kayak the River events, which booked out all three times they were held in the last year.

The paddles provided the opportunity for 60 participants to head out on the water and deepen their knowledge of the city’s rivers.
