Artwaves 2022

Celebration planned for 30-year-old young artist program

A program which has served as a valuable stepping stone for young artists in the City of Logan will celebrate its 30th anniversary this month.

Artwaves recognises the creative excellence of young artists in the region through an annual exhibition.

It also acknowledges the contribution made by teachers and parents nurturing students’ creativity and developing the next generation of local artists.

Artworks are selected by a committee of Logan Art Gallery staff and visual art teachers from participating schools.

Artwaves 2022: will bring together 28 different schools and 190 students from years seven to 12 at Logan Art Gallery between September 9 and October 15.

Artist Monica Rohan, now based in Brisbane, remembers taking part in Artwaves as a young student while attending Beaudesert State High School.

“I was super keen on art, and it was exciting to be with other students who were too,” Monica said.

“It was great. I felt respected to be selected.

“I’m glad Artwaves is still running.”

Monica, who has twice exhibited in the Archibald Prize at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, was also a guest speaker at Artwaves in 2012 soon after graduating with honours from Queensland College of Art.

Her Artwaves’ experience helped propel her towards a career as an artist and today she is represented by Brisbane’s Jan Murphy Gallery and Sophie Gannon Gallery in Melbourne.

Monica is now busy creating large-scale paintings for a Rockhampton Art Gallery exhibition in November 2022.

She is also working towards her next solo exhibition which will open at Jan Murphy Gallery in April next year.

City Lifestyle Chair, Councillor Laurie Koranski said maintenance works at Logan Art Galley were now completed and the facility would re-open for Artwaves 2022.

“While it has been wonderful to be out at Logan West Community Centre over the last couple of months with the pop-up gallery, it will be nice to return to our permanent home in Logan Central,” Cr Koranski said.

“We thank the community for their patience as these essential works were completed and look forward to sharing the refreshed gallery space with you.”

Cr Koranski encourages the community to visit the gallery and view the wonderful array of artworks produced by the students for this year’s Artwaves.

“Once again they have risen to the challenge and created some thought-provoking and eye-catching works.”

Artwaves was established by a small group of dedicated and enthusiastic visual art teachers from six local high schools.

With the support of Logan City Council and Education Queensland Artwaves was held at Kingston Butter Factory between 1992 and 1994 before moving to Logan Art Gallery when it opened in 1995.
