Eyes on waterways after heavy rain

Minor flooding and storm debris cuts 100 roads

Moderate flooding is occurring in parts of the City of Logan after extensive rainfall yesterday and overnight across South East Queensland, including heavy falls in the Logan and Albert river catchments.

More than 100 local roads are impacted or closed as a result of last week’s storms and yesterday’s rain.

Flood-prone areas and some parks in suburbs including Logan Village, Eagleby, Cedar Creek, Jimboomba, Logan Reserve, Forestdale and Eagleby are also impacted.

More than 300mm has fallen in some parts of the catchments since Sunday night with falls in excess of 150mmm recorded more broadly across Logan in the last 24 hours.

The Bureau of Meteorology has forecast further rain today but contracting north and easing tonight. Flash flooding is possible.

Moderate and minor flood warnings are in place for the Logan and Albert Rivers as extensive in-flows move downstream.

Flood water peaks are not expected to be anywhere near those experienced in 2022 or 2017.

As at noon on Tuesday, January 2, key information for the community includes:

• Logan SES has responded to 136 call outs in the last 24 hours. Anyone needing SES assistance should call 132 500. If the situation is life-threatening, call 000.
• Self-serve sandbags are available for local residents until 4pm today at the Logan East State Emergency Services Depot at 26-36 Winnetts Rd; Daisy Hill, SES Logan Village, 1464 Waterford Tamborine Rd, Logan Village; Beenleigh Showgrounds in Milne Street and the car park of Logan Metro Sports Centre at Heritage Park (until supplies are depleted).
• Those accessing the service need to bring their own shovel and can also bring their own plastic shopping bags to fill with sand. Sandbags are not available at Logan City Council depots. If it is not possible to visit the SES depot, and the situation is an emergency, call 132 500 to make alternative arrangements.
• Road debris and road closures can be reported to Council on 3412 3412. All non-urgent requests can be reported at qld.gov.au

Mayor Darren Power praised Logan residents for their resilience in challenging times over the last 12 days.

“Since Christmas we’ve had storms, blackouts, a heatwave and now moderate flooding,” Councillor Power said.

“I urge everyone to stay safe, stay at home if possible, and continue to heed the advice of emergency services and Council.

“We will get through this if we continue to work together.”

Support for those impacted by storms over Christmas is still available but some services have been impacted today by local flooding.

The latest information includes:

• A Community Recovery Hub at Jimboomba Library and Community Centre on Honora St is open from 9am to 4pm daily until at least the end of the week. The hub provides a place for residents to engage with Community Recovery staff, receive referrals for community and government agencies, apply for hardship grants and receive insurance information.
• Support for residents impacted by storms, blackouts or flooding is available through the Community Recovery Hotline – 1800 173 349 – or online
• Energex reports more than 2000 customers are still without power across the City of Logan. Work is continuing to reconnect homes to the network or generated power. For outage update go online
• To assist with the clean-up, residents can dispose of storm-related waste at Council’s transfer stations at no cost. The Browns Plains transfer station is the preferred location and loads greater than two cubic metres must be taken there. Council’s waste contractor Cleanaway continues to collect general, recycling and green waste wheelie bins where possible. If a bin is missed, residents are advised to leave the bin out, if it is safe to do so, and it will be collected as soon as possible. To report a missed bin go online or call 3412 3412.
• The Mt Warren Sports and Fitness Centre is closed today due to reduce staffing levels because of local flooding.
• Council’s immunisation clinic scheduled for Jimboomba on Thursday, January 4, has been cancelled. Those who booked in will be contacted.
