Federal election only days away

Make your vote count for the City of Logan on polling day

With just days until the Federal election, City of Logan Mayor Darren Power says residents should think carefully about who gets their vote by assessing what’s on offer from candidates.

He said it appeared local candidates seemed more cautious about making funding commitments during this election as cost of living and inflation pressures mount.

Over the past few weeks, Logan City Council has highlighted 16 projects through the ‘Stand up for Logan’ pre-election advocacy program:

  • A 2032 Olympics venue for Logan
  • Proposed Greenbank Interchange (Middle and Teviot roads)
  • Loganlea Rd widening project
  • Underwood Rd bus turnaround
  • Bethania to Logan Village recreational rail trail
  • Park Ridge leisure centre and general community space
  • Beenleigh Aquatic Centre stage 2
  • Waterford West District Park stage 2
  • Oliver’s Precinct First Nations space
  • Logan Central Youth Centre
  • Park upgrades: Springwood Park master plan and Forestglen Park master plan
  • Jimboomba local road and stormwater upgrades
  • CCTV safety cameras and room upgrade
  • Protection and recovery of threatened species in Logan
  • Climate resilience actions
  • Internet connectivity and mobile blackspot coverage

Of those projects, the Australian Labor Party ($800,000) and Liberal National Party ($2 million) have both pledged funding to CCTV safety camera and monitoring room upgrades.

The ALP has also promised $22.5 million for the Loganlea Rd upgrade, $840,000 for the Logan Central Youth Centre and $357,500 towards the Underwood Rd bus turnaround.*

Cr Power said other commitments announced during the election campaign were welcomed, including funding for urgent care medical centres (ALP), revisiting the Inland Rail alignment (ALP), establishing a skills laboratory at the TAFE Loganlea campus (ALP) and $7.3 million for Beenleigh’s Hammel Park redevelopment (LNP).

“Since the election was called last month, Council has been consistent in calling on local candidates to prioritise a better future for our city by standing up for Logan,” he said.

“Our population is growing and our city needs to grow with it through the timely delivery of infrastructure to ensure liveability, economic growth and sustainability.

“With half a million people set to live here by 2041, we will need state-of-the-art digital infrastructure, good community facilities, free-flowing roads and healthy environments.”

Cr Power said he looked forward to working with whoever formed government to achieve positive outcomes for the City of Logan.

“Council will continue advocating for our city’s needs as it’s important to work together across all levels of government,” he said.

“Our online election tracker clearly outlines which candidates were willing to commit to a better future for the City of Logan, and I encourage voters to take a look before they cast their votes.

“To the candidates who’ve stepped up for the opportunity to represent us in Canberra, I wish each one of you the best of luck on Saturday.”
