Sports awards 2022

Time running out to nominate sporting heroes like Andre

Those seeking inspiration ahead of this year’s City of Logan Sports Awards need look no further than rising Woodridge athletics star, Andre Rivett.

The 2021 Elite Athlete with a Disability award winner continues to prove success begets success after recently claiming another accolade – a silver medal in discus – at the 2022 IAADS World Championships.

Mayor Darren Power congratulated Andre on the achievement at last week’s Logan City Council meeting.

Nominations for the City of Logan Sports Awards close next Friday, September 9.

The Mayor said Andre’s ongoing journey should encourage the local sporting community to nominate their heroes for recognition.

“We are very proud that our City of Logan sporting clubs continue to be platforms for the sporting stars of tomorrow,” Cr Power said.

“It has been a thrill to watch Andre’s progress in recent years as he has achieved milestone after milestone.

“Every year, our City of Logan Sports Awards are held to encourage more of our sportspeople, like Andre, to reach for the stars.

“We hope to see the names of many more local heroes in lights this year, but that all depends on the nominations we receive.”

Andre’s father, Steven Rivett, said encouragement from the local community, and their sporting peers, was invaluable for young athletes.

“The thing that keeps Andre going is recognition… and the (City of Logan) Sports Awards, have always been a big part of that,” Mr Rivett said.

“For athletes with a disability, just to see that they’ve been nominated in a category, it puts another pep in their step.”

To nominate an individual athlete, sporting team or official for recognition, go to logan.qld.gov.au/sportsawards.

The City of Logan Sports Awards and gala dinner will be held on Saturday, October 29 at the Logan Entertainment Centre.

Tickets to attend the gala event can be purchased through the same website from mid-September. For more information, email events@logan.qld.gov.au.
