Apprentices given the kit to success

Three Logan City Council apprentices have been presented with the tools of their trades to take on their journey towards exciting careers.

Mayor Darren Power today presented the kits to Matthew Thompson (apprentice mechanical fitter), Mathew Bond (apprentice plumber) and JD Christ (heavy commercial vehicle mechanic apprentice).

The young men are part of a pilot program to determine the viability of directly hiring apprentices and trainees into Council’s workforce rather than using third-party training organisations.

Queensland legislation requires employers to provide apprentices with tools of trade for each year of their apprenticeships, and this is the first cohort to receive their starter kits from Council.

Councillor Power said regardless of how they were hired, Council trainees and apprentices gained nationally-recognised qualifications while getting valuable workplace experience.

“The people we employ through our trainee and apprentice program are highly regarded,” Cr Power said.

“They develop a good work ethic and learn skills that set them up for lifelong success in their chosen fields.

“Council employs around 35 people through this program each year, which is not only building our city’s future skilled workforce, but also encouraging them to aspire to a prosperous future.

“Having a trade can take you far, and we are proud to support the next generation who’ll be looking after our city’s infrastructure for years to come.”
