Plan to re-open Eagleby 'beach-entry pool'

Waves of excitement as Eagleby ‘beach-entry pool’ to re-open

Logan City Council today outlined a plan to re-open the Eagleby Aquatic Centre’s 25-metre outdoor beach-entry leisure pool in time for next summer.

The pool and surrounds will be refurbished with new shade sails, shelters and seating as part of an overarching design plan for the Bishop Street Park Precinct.

The design plan also features a proposed Stage 2 redevelopment of the precinct, which could feature a water play area along with enhancements to the surrounding park, new walking tracks and increased native vegetation areas.

Eagleby Aquatic Centre was closed last year amid safety concerns at the aging venue, which has high voltage powerlines over the complex’s separate and damaged lap pool, which will now be demolished.

The Stage 1 refurbishment will be funded from an insurance claim reimbursement on the damaged pool and Division 12 Local Infrastructure Program funding.

Council conducted extensive community feedback in recent months including a Bishop Street Park ‘Have Your Say’ survey, which attracted 487 submissions, along with local pop-up community consultation sessions.

Division 12 Councillor Karen Murphy, who did not support the closure of the facility last year, said Council had listened closely to feedback from Eagleby families and residents.

“I’m proud to have advocated on behalf of my local community to achieve this result,” Cr Murphy said.

“Council is committed to providing safe, cost-effective community facilities that benefit all community members and taking steps towards re-opening the popular Eagleby beach-entry pool is a wonderful outcome.

“The Stage 1 plan will not only see the beach-entry pool re-open as we continue to incorporate community feedback into the proposed Stage 2, it will also be the first step towards revitalising public parkland and sports facilities in the heart of Eagleby.”

Today’s decision, adopted by the City Lifestyle Committee, will be presented for ratification at Council’s Ordinary Meeting on Wednesday, March 22.
