Wet weather hits City of Logan

City of Logan wet weather update – Saturday, February 26 at 2pm

As heavy rainfall continues around South East Queensland, Logan City Council continues to urge residents and businesses to exercise caution over the weekend.

The city’s catchments have had varying levels of rainfall over the past 24 hours – from 40mm to more than 200mm.

City of Logan Mayor Darren Power said local rivers, creeks and waterways were flooding as a result and some residents may become isolated in the coming days as roads are cut off.

“We need our community to be aware and alert of how they might be impacted and also be sensible about how they handle the conditions,” Councillor Power said.

“Schmidts Rd at Logan Reserve is already isolated, and other areas could also become affected by rising waterways.

“Now is the time to be prepared – make sure you have essential food and medication, and that your family and pets are safe.

“And please keep travel to a minimum as heavy rain continues to fall across the city.”

Communities that could be potentially impacted include:

• Logan Village and Buccan around Dairy Creek, Ooah Creek and Quinzeh Creek
• Jimboomba and Glenlogan, around Henderson Creek and the Logan River

Cr Power said people should check on their neighbours if it was safe to do so, especially those who are vulnerable.

“I ask people to be patient and wait for flood waters to recede,” he said.

“Do not go sightseeing, and remember – if it’s flooded, forget it!

“Anyone who enters a flooded road, creek or drain not only endangers their own life but they also risk the lives of those who may have to go in and rescue them.”

The SES has had 200 calls for assistance in the city for this wet weather event; 27 volunteers are responding today.

Some power outages have been reported at Greenbank and more than 100 road hazards/closures have been identified, including many of the city’s major thoroughfares.

For flood emergency assistance, Council urges residents and business owners to contact the SES on 132 500. For life-threatening emergencies, call Triple Zero (000).

Council recommends avoiding contact with floodwaters for up to five days after heavy rainfall due to potential risks from bacteria carried into waterways from runoff.
