An artful way to relax
On a Friday night in Browns Plains, the art scene is buzzing and more vibrant than ever.
Amateur artists, clad in white, have gathered for a paint and sip workshop at Pinot & Picasso.
You get the best of both worlds here – step-by-step painting instruction by a local artist and whatever you decided to BYO for sipping and nibbling.
Tonight’s theme is Van Glow, where participants huddle around easels in the dark to recreate Starry Night by Van Gogh. The room starts to light up as the painters begin stippling glow in the dark paint on their canvasses.
‘It’s just fun, all the time,’ owner Charis Kelly says.
‘From the second people walk in the door, they’re smiling because they’re looking forward to catching up with friends or some quality me-time.
‘We’ve got music playing and there’s a nice ambience, so people can really relax.’
Although paint and sip has been a popular go-to event for many years, Pinot & Picasso is one of the few located in the City of Logan.
‘Everybody wants to set up in the city and lots of communities get overlooked,’ Charis says.
‘We thought people in Logan would enjoy this – it’s a different kind of activity close to home and you don’t need to make a big night out of it.’
As predicted, locals are delighted that there is something new to do without driving into the city.
‘People aren’t expecting us to be here, and they don’t realise how lovely the area is,’ Charis says.
‘We’re just around the corner from a coffee shop, there are plenty of eateries and a lovely main street that is underutilised at the moment.’
Pinot & Picasso offer a variety of workshops for all ages, with themes like Sunset in Santorini and Sid Tuesday for children during the school holidays.
At the most popular workshop named Udderly Adorable, you can complete and take home a painting of a Highland cow adorned with flowers.
‘People are always so surprised by their ability at the end of the class,’ Charis says.
‘A lot of people feel quite daunted initially, but we break it down into the tiniest steps.
We aim to teach people at a beginner level without any experience, because anyone can be an artist and create something they’re proud of.’
