Pick your own dragon fruit in Logan
If you’re looking for the freshest fruit around this season, all you need is a pair of gloves and a can-do attitude.
Pick-your-own enthusiasts have been appearing in Forestdale by the carload in pursuit of the dragon fruit, a spiky and somewhat peculiar looking fruit that grows on succulent stems.
Forest Dragon Fruit Farm is home to 16 types of dragon fruit and is one of the few suppliers in Australia with so much variety.
Owner Kevin Hu, who runs the farm with his wife, is adamant that many have never tasted a proper dragon fruit before.
‘Dragon fruits at the supermarket are either overripe and tasteless or too green,’ he says.
‘Our visitors say how different, yummy and fresh our fruit is compared to ones they’ve had in the past.
‘Each type also tastes different with varying levels of sweetness – some taste like grapes and some are like lychees. They’re all delicious.’
The popularity of the farm’s produce is a testament to the couple’s work ethic. They work day and night to grow, pick and deliver perfectly ripe dragon fruits.
Kevin, who previously worked as a programmer, learned everything from YouTube videos of growers in countries like Taiwan, Vietnam, and China.
‘We started with a single dragon fruit and kept learning and growing,’ he says.
‘It’s important to be precise about everything – getting the soil right, using fertilizer properly, taking care of them when they get sick in the winter.
‘The hardest part was getting all the varieties we wanted in Australia.’
It’s currently prime fruit picking season at the farm, with 20 or so cars pulling up at the farm every week to pick fruit and feed the resident alpacas and cows.
The fruit is much more affordable at the farm, where you can take home a bucket of fruit for a mere $10 versus at the supermarket, where a single dragon fruit will set you back $4.50.
