EcoJoule’s approach for a greener future
In the face of climate change, many turned to solar power as a cleaner alternative to fossil fuel energy.
The uptick in solar has not been without challenges, however.
Back in 2011, engineer Mike Wishart identified 2 common issues with solar: the value of energy decreasing by nightfall, and voltage problems that would stress the power grid and cause solar systems to trip.
‘At the time, a huge number of solar panels were being added to residential homes and causing problems for the grid,’ Mike says.
‘I had just read a few books that made me realise climate change was going to be a big issue, so I thought I’d start looking for solutions that allow the grid to embrace solar.’
Like many other entrepreneurs, Mike saw the potential for solar power to change the climate game and founded EcoJoule to make the world a greener place.
EcoJoule addresses one of the major challenges of renewable power – storing electricity that is generated throughout the day for when it is needed.
As electricity producers move away from polluting coal-fired electricity, demand for renewable sources is growing.
EcoJoule now serves major network companies like Energex, Endeavour Energy and Ausgrid by providing energy storage batteries along with network voltage regulators.
What began as a one-man show has turned into a fully-fledged company in Loganholme, complete with a lofty office space and 15 full-time employees.
‘Logan is growing and very convenient – our 2 main subcontractors are based here, and we also try to manufacture as much as we can in the area,’ Mike says.
‘My sense is that there are lot of other companies in the area that are doing quite well.’
Mike was also recently recognised in The Australian’s Green Power Players list.
‘I was pretty humbled – very surprised, actually,’ Mike says.
‘I think it’s just nice to be recognised as making a difference. I’m very passionate about doing something about climate change and it’s not just me – it’s the company that’s helping in a positive way.’
EcoJoule is already making waves on the global power landscape with sales in Europe and export enquiries from North America.
The sky’s the limit for Mike, whose first foray into renewable energy is gaining more traction by the day.
‘We want to keep expanding and design bigger products because the more we roll out, the faster the transition to renewables,’ he says.
