New service helps parents get ahead

A new service helping parents and carers with young children has opened at Slacks Creek.

The Parent Pathways free service is delivered by YFS to residents in Slacks Creek, along with Beaudesert, Beenleigh, Crestmead, Hillcrest, Loganlea, Forest Lake, Jimboomba, and Yarrabilba.

Client Service Manager for YFS, Diana Townsend, says the service is a huge win for these communities, which have experienced unparalleled growth in recent years.

‘Parent Pathways meets parents and carers wherever they are in their journey,’ Ms Townsend says.

‘Some participants have a clear idea of their next steps while others just want to chat with a mentor to discuss their options.

‘Sometimes a parent wants to start studying but needs financial assistance to purchase a laptop or some help navigating the enrolment process.

‘Other participants just feel they are ready for a change and want to work on a personal goal like getting their driver’s license.’

Parent Pathways is funded by the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations and provides personalised mentoring and financial assistance to parents or carers with a child 6 years or younger who also meet certain eligibility requirements, including not currently being in paid employment.

With the cost of living putting extra financial pressure on families, Ms Townsend says Parent Pathways is an invaluable support to families with a parent or carer who may be considering re-entering the workforce but need some help upskilling with a short course, redrafting their resume, or arranging childcare.

‘If someone chooses to participate, we work around their family commitments,’ Ms Townsend says.

‘It’s a very flexible service – you can take a break whenever you need and children are always welcome at appointments with you.’

The new child-friendly Parent Pathway’s office is at 1/22 Duke Street, Slacks Creek, offering toys and change facilities, wheelchair accessibility and free parking. It can be easily reached via public transport.
