Gluten-free, vegan, paleo, keto and delicious
At Primal Food Café in Meadowbrook, you can eat what you love – even if you’re gluten-free, paleo, vegan or keto.
Choose from crowd-pleasers like chicken parmigiana, saucy meatballs and chicken quesadillas, which can be adjusted to suit various dietary requirements.
Director Anne-Marie Haylock, who now follows a grain and sugar-free diet after struggling with her health for most of her life, knows the frustration of dining out firsthand.
‘Wherever you go, it’s really difficult because you’re constantly asking if they can adapt this or that,’ she says.
‘On top of that, many places aren’t equipped to prevent cross-contamination, so you end up being poisoned by food that everyone else can eat.’
For Anne-Marie, going grain and sugar-free reduced her bouts of illness, pain, and brain fog.
Primal Food Café is one of a handful of restaurants in Logan and beyond with kitchen equipment designed to prevent cross-contamination.
‘I wanted to provide a café where everyone can eat the same food as everyone else; where the menu is clear about which options can be adjusted,’ Anne Marie says.
‘Our goal is to nourish people by cooking food that is delicious and healthy, with the bonus that most of it is gluten-free, paleo, keto or vegan.
‘Of course, we can adapt things to cater for everyone.’
The cafe’s extensive menu has been years in the making, requiring finesse, patience, and plenty of experimentation.
Anne-Marie, a trained gourmet cook, spends her time researching and creating new recipes that incorporate a bevy of alternative ingredients to suit all dietary needs.
Diners without dietary requirements are often pleasantly surprised by how delicious the food is.
‘Most of our products happen to be gluten-free and customers always say they taste even better than the regular versions,’ Anne-Marie says.
Her personal favourite is the chicken quesadillas dish with shredded chicken, onion relish and tasty cheese, which can of course, be made gluten-free.
For dessert, Anne-Marie recommends the rich paleo brownie and the gluten-free carrot cake.
‘All of our gluten-free baked items are made in-house under strict food prep guidelines,’ she says.
‘We also try to make whatever else we can in our kitchen, like our onion relish, apple chutney and hollandaise sauce.’
Her love for unprocessed and healthy food is also reflected in the café’s design, which features timber-look furniture, greenery and a statement wall depicting a waterfall.
