Governor of Queensland visit

A first-hand look at the resilience of the City of Logan community was provided this week to the Governor of Queensland, Her Excellency the Honourable Dr Jeannette Young PSM.

Her Excellency visited Logan City Council on Wednesday, meeting with Councillors, staff and the community to inspect the continuing clean-up and recovery efforts after the recent severe weather event.

At least 265 homes and 62 businesses were inundated (water above the floor) in the City of Logan with Council reaching out to about 550 property owners impacted by the floods.

Local flooding exceeded 2017 levels caused by ex-TC Debbie but was slightly lower than flood heights in 1974.

The Governor was impressed by the community spirit she witnessed while driving around flood-impacted areas.

She also visited Council’s Marsden Depot with Mayor Darren Power to thank the teams from Council and emergency services for their outstanding efforts during the disaster and in the recovery.

Her Excellency described the City of Logan’s flood response as ‘courageous’.

‘The members of all our emergency organisations, along with the assistance of the ADF (Australian Defence Force) and all our community organisations, have performed remarkably over the last few months,’ she says.

‘It’s a blessing and probably a bit of a curse that we’ve got such a well-oiled machine in Queensland when it comes to disaster response. People just expect Queensland to do well.

‘Logan is a really important part of Queensland, so much good comes out of Logan, you make me very proud to be the Governor of Queensland.’

Cr Power said the Governor’s visit highlighted the tireless dedication of an ‘endless list’ of people that assisted the community.

‘From those who leapt into action at the first signs of severe weather to those who are now guiding us through the recovery, we are so grateful to you for keeping us safe and helping our community get back on its feet,’ he says.

‘I extend a sincere thank you to everyone who has played a role in the response and recovery efforts.’
