New Logan maternity space means more choice and support for mums and babies

When their first son Tevita was born at Logan Hospital, mum Bella Atkins and dad Devontay To’a were overwhelmed with love for their beautiful boy.

And, during Bella’s stay in hospital, Devontay was able to stay with her the whole time, thanks to  new maternity wards at Logan Hospital that allow  partners to stay overnight with new mums. Previously, this wasn’t possible..

‘It is amazing to be able to be here overnight to offer that support and spend time with Tevita,’  Devontay says.

‘There’s also lots of space for me to go and call family and hang out with other visitors when Bella needs some space or peace. It makes it really easy to make sure everything is comfortable for all the mums and babies here.’

The refurbished maternity unit has additional beds, single and double rooms all with ensuite bathrooms and baby baths, sleeping facilities for partners and warm, calming colour schemes.

There’s also dedicated family rooms and a more modern, spacious design.

Still to come are the refurbished birthing suites, which will have access to birthing pools offering more choice to birthing mums, a separate entry to the main hospital and a refurbished, expanded special care nursery.

Bella says , the soon-to-be-married couple were also overwhelmed with the support offered by the maternity staff.

‘Everyone here has been awesome. We were made to feel special the whole time and not like a number,’ she says.

‘We are really happy.’
