Council grants target hoons

Life is about to get harder for hoons in the City of Logan with more cameras monitoring local streets.

Logan City Council is funding the installation of new surveillance cameras at five local businesses to help prevent and capture the actions of hooning drivers.

Businesses were invited to apply for grant funding for targeted anti-hooning measures, such as surveillance cameras or signage, as part of the City of Logan Hooning Action Plan.

Hooning Taskforce Chair, Councillor Jacob Heremaia says $8500 was distributed between the successful applicants.

‘Council is proud to be supporting our great local businesses in taking the necessary steps to deter hooning pests,” Cr Heremaia says.

‘Hooning is a scourge on our industrial areas, but Council will continue to work closely with business owners and police to ensure the safety and security of workplaces.’

Deputy Mayor and Division 5 Councillor Jon Raven says Berrinba business Pinnacle Hardware was among those to receive funding for a new surveillance camera, which was installed last month.

‘Every new camera installed provides police with another tool to capture evidence of hooning,’ Cr Raven says.

‘We want hoons to feel as though they’re being watched from every street corner, so it’s fantastic that we can partner with businesses such as Pinnacle to achieve that.’

Council’s Hooning Taskforce is a collaborative cross-agency group that includes  Queensland Police Service and Department of Transport and Main Roads. The group works to identify and proactively target hooning activities across the city.

Several initiatives have now been rolled out as part of the action plan, including the recent installation of artificial intelligence cameras at hooning hotspots in Loganholme, Loganlea and Berrinba.
