Finessing the fine art of socialising

The weekly catchup of the Crestmead Artists group is a whole lot more than just brushing up on painting skills.

While the group has a clear focus on art, its members also enjoy socialising and sharing tips and knowledge about their craft.

Crestmead Artists, which has more than 40 members, has been going for more 20 years. The group is based at the Crestmead PCYC in Gimlet Street.

Members meet every Thursday from 8.30 am to noon. Entry is $5, which includes morning tea.

Participants are required to bring their own art equipment. The group welcomes beginners through to more advanced artists across various media including watercolours, acrylics, pastels and drawing.

Although encouragement is endless, no support services or formal trainers are offered.

Division 5 Councillor Jon Raven says the friendly atmosphere is evident at every Crestmead Artists meeting.

‘I’m not sure what’s more important, the art or the chinwag, but either way it is a great community group to get involved in,’ Cr Raven says.

Crestmead Artists President Noel Rogers says the social aspect is important for the group, but so too are the intraclub contests run 3 times a year.

‘They are very keenly contested. The prizes aren’t much, but boy it feels good when you win,’ Noel says.
