Safer access takes keen skaters to new heights

The stairway to half-pipe heaven just got easier at Beenleigh’s Doug Larsen Park

Division 12 Councillor Karen Murphy met with local skaters and BMX riders to discuss their concerns about safety for younger enthusiasts using the giant half-pipe at the facility, which was designed with the input of BMX freestyle Olympic gold medallist Logan Martin.

A new set of access stairs will now be installed to make it easier and safer for riders keen to take their BMX and skating passions to new heights on the half-pipe.

‘I thank all the local skaters who spoke to me about this issue and shared their concerns,’ Cr Murphy says.

‘Your input and feedback were crucial in making this project happen.

‘It’s always great to see our community come together to improve our public spaces, and I am proud to have been a part of this effort.’

Local skater and Mount Warren Park resident Brad Dustin says the new stairs will bring even more skaters to Doug Larsen Park to enjoy the facility.

‘Without the stairs, it is a real workout to get back to the top of the half-pipe once you come off,’ Brad says.

‘Once they are installed, it will make it safer for everyone and easier and more enjoyable to get rides.

‘It will also give opportunities for the facility to host vertical competitions.’

Additional enhancements will also be made at the facility including the planting of 5 native trees to help provide more shade.
