Star-powered pool is inspiration for everyone

The next generation of local sports stars could be on their way to Olympic glory as swimmers lap up the new facilities at Logan North Aquatic Centre.

The centrepiece of the $9 million upgrade at Underwood is the Jodie Henry Pool, named after one of the City of Logan’s greatest products.

Jodie, an Olympic gold medallist and multiple world record holder, credits the Logan North Aquatic Centre (known then as the Springwood pool) as where her love of swimming began.

She joined Councillor Mindy Russell and other dignitaries at the facility’s reopening in October.

The development of Olympic-sized (50m) pools in local communities is invaluable to aspiring athletes, Jodie says.

‘It drastically changes the training you do, if you are only swimming shortcourse (25 metres) you are training differently,’ she says.

Cr Russell says Jodie, a former student at nearby Springwood Central State School, fully deserves the accolade of having the new pool named in her honour.

‘It was amazing to have Jodie, a proud and humble product of our great city, at the opening of the pool which now bears her name,’ Cr Russell says.

‘To have her back where her swim career all started was an honour.’

As well as 2 additional lanes, more is on the way with a new splash pad for young paddlers set to be completed in 2023.
