Pets need new homes and winter blankets

As the temperature drops in the cooler months, many of Logan’s animals in need of a new home must be dreaming of the cuddles awaiting them with their future owner.

With winter’s arrival, people can make those dreams come true by visiting the Animal Management Centre in Kingston to adopt a new pet. Or if you can’t take a pet home, donating blankets is also much appreciated.

Dogs such as Louie the dachshund french bulldog mix and cats such as Penelope the part-ragdoll breed are among the lucky animals in City of Logan to have already been rehomed this winter with a new family.

New pet owner Chloe Reid cradles her rehomed cat Penelope.

Penelope’s new home is at Biggera Waters on the Gold Coast with Chloe Reid and partner Ash Brown. ‘It was Ash’s birthday, and I was searching for cats and found her photo on the Kingston centre’s website,’ Chloe explains.

The Animal Management Centre in Kingston has recently opened a state-of-the-art cat rehoming centre, so each cat now has a bedroom, playroom and ensuite while they wait to find their new family.

‘So we bought her home and we’ve only had her 3 weeks and she already has her favourite place on the couch and favourite blanket and snuggles on it every day. She is 6 months and is very calm in nature and even when we pulled her out of her crate on the first day she purred straight away. She honestly is a dream cat and she is an only child for us,’ Chloe laughs.

‘She’s taught me to unwind a bit and spend time at home and chill out – although she does do zoomies around the house and has a thing for ping pong balls,’ she laughs again.

As for 9-month-old Louie, after just one week with new owners Lee and Besh Nassif in Sunnybank Hills, he is already best snuggle mates with their jack russell staffy mix named Lucy, who was also adopted from the Animal Management Centre 5 years ago.

‘We bought Lucy home for our first dog Cherry, who we also adopted from the centre, and ever since we said our goodbyes to her a few months ago, Lucy has been grieving and struggling with the loss of her mate.

‘We felt the timing was right to have another furbaby and now one day after Louie came home, he seems like an old soul and they are already sharing the blankets together.

‘They are both unique animals – Louie has the physique of a dachshund and parts of his face look like a bulldog, while Lucy looks like a giant jack russell – and they love playing together.’

Lee says the pair of pooches have beds comfier than hers with the amount of blankets and sheepskin cushions they share.

‘We also have 2 cats and I would have more pets if I could, but it’s been really nice to be able to give surrendered pets their forever home. I’d like to tell other people that it’s very rewarding – we get so much joy out of them all.’

Louie and Lucy have formed a fast friendship as rehomed pets with owners Lee and Besh Nassif.

People who are unable to provide a new home for a pet at this point in time, can still help the many cats and dogs and other animals being cared for at the Animal Management Centre – by donating blankets and linen.

Logan City Council staff member Kate Neilsen says the Animal Management Centre is currently taking donations of blankets, towels, and medium or large dog coats – however, pillows and doonas are not accepted due to potential choking hazards for animals.

‘‘We want to provide our animals with the best care we possibly can and providing towels and blankets to keep them warm and comfortable is important to us,’ Kate says.

‘Our disease processes mean each animal gets its own blanket or towel and this creates a big demand for these second-hand items.’

Kate says people can make a difference this winter by delivering any unwanted blankets, towels and dog coats to one of the 4 designated donation collection areas.

These areas are:

  • Logan City Council Jimboomba Customer Service Centre, at the customer service area.
  • Logan City Council Beenleigh Customer Service Centre, at the customer service area.
  • Logan City Council Administration Centre on Wembley Road at Logan Central, at the customer service centre.
  • Logan City Council’s Animal Management Centre on Queen’s Road at Kingston, at the walkway between cat sales and the customer carpark.
