Council budget on the way

City of Logan Budget to build for brighter tomorrow

City of Logan residents can expect increased investment to sustain rapid growth in next week’s Logan City Council 2022/2023 Budget.

Sporting facilities, the environment, innovation and infrastructure will benefit from budget initiatives and spending.

Mayor Darren Power said it would be a ‘controlled budget’ that would deliver a surplus while meeting the needs of a growing city.

“Catering to the expanding needs of one of Queensland’s fastest-growing regions must be balanced with sound fiscal responsibility and we have done that again this year,” Cr Power said.

“This budget will see controlled spending across priority projects that will benefit the community and ensure value for money from Council.

“We are building a brighter tomorrow for the City of Logan through quality lifestyles, more jobs, economic growth and increased sustainability.”

Cr Power said the COVID-19 pandemic and recent floods had taken a toll on the city and put pressure on supply chains.

But he cited the recent delivery of projects such as the Kingston Butter Factory entertainment precinct and Australia’s first biosolids gasification facility at Loganholme Wastewater Treatment Plant as examples of pushing ahead when times are tough.

“The City of Logan has consistently punched above its weight as a forward-thinking and progressive Council and we are leading the way with the delivery of community infrastructure and environmental projects,” he said.

“We’re also attracting quality development to the city with private investment into new hospitals and award-winning housing estates.

“Every time a resident turns on a tap or puts out a bin, visits a library or travels on a Council road to take the kids to a park, they are relying on a Council service and these things cost a lot of money.

“The cost of bitumen and steel continues to soar, but we cannot afford to put the brakes on projects that our residents expect to be delivered.

“We’re investing in vital infrastructure, road upgrades and a city-wide beautification program. We want to support existing businesses and attract new ones.

“We are also backing sport and youth programs that help make our city a fun and healthy place to grow up in.”

Logan was categorised as ‘low risk’ in a recent report by Auditor-General Brendan Worrall, where 22 Queensland councils were identified as ‘high risk’ of not being financially sustainable.

“Our city is in a sound financial position and I want to thank the Councillors and Council staff for working diligently to bring down another responsible budget for our residents,” Cr Power said.

Logan City Council’s 2022/2023 Budget will be presented at 10am on Monday, June 20. It will be livestreamed on YouTube.
