City of Logan flood update: Friday, March 4

The City of Logan is taking its first steps towards flood recovery with the opening of two new support centres for those impacted by this week’s severe weather event.

Community recovery hubs at Beenleigh and Jimboomba provide a place where residents can talk to support and recovery staff, receive referrals for community and government agencies and apply for hardship grants.

The hubs are open every day from 9am to 4pm.

They are located at:

• Beenleigh PCYC, 20-38 Alamein Street, Beenleigh
• Caddies Community Centre, 19-33 South Street, Jimboomba

The evacuation centre at the Logan Metro Health, Fitness & Events Centre at Crestmead has now closed.

Anyone who still needs evacuation support should attend one of the community recovery hubs.

At least 90 homes were inundated in the City of Logan earlier this week.

City of Logan Mayor Darren Power thanked the Red Cross, the Salvation Army, SES and Council staff who assisted in the setting up and operation of the evacuation centre.

“They provided a safe place where flood victims could get shelter and support during what was a very difficult time for dozens of families,” Mayor Power said.

“We’ve seen so many acts of kindness and compassion over the last few days, but that’s not a surprise as Logan always shines in adversity.

“We can now look towards recovery and helping everyone who has been impacted by the floods get their lives back to normal.

“The opening of the community recovery hubs is the first major step towards getting the city on track again.”

A free kerbside collection of flood debris and flood-damaged items will be available from next week in flood-affected residential areas of the City of Logan.

This is not a city-wide waste collection.

This flood waste clean-up will only occur in streets where the residential properties were inundated by flood water.

Residential properties that were not inundated by flood water will not receive the flood waste clean-up service.

Different types of waste should be placed in separate piles on the footpath. If there is
flood-affected asbestos material contact Council for assistance.

Residents can also dispose of flood-related waste and rubbish free of charge at any of Council’s Waste and Recycling Facilities at Browns Plains, Beenleigh, Carbrook, Greenbank and Logan Village.

Other flood-related developments in the City of Logan today include:

• A number of roads remain closed or affected by floodwater including Schmidt’s Road, Logan Reserve. For a full list of affected roads visit Council’s Disaster Dashboard Home – Disaster Dashboard (logan.qld.gov.au)
• Those wanting to volunteer to help clean up can register through Volunteering Queensland at Volunteering Registration registered volunteers should wait to be directed to a clean-up site but that may not occur until the latest weather warnings have passed. Authorities advise all non-essential workers to stay home for the next 24 hours.
• Those who have been without electricity for an extended period should practise food safety precautions. Advice on managing your food supply is available at Food safety
• Eligible community organisations, schools and social enterprises can apply for up to $5000 from Logan City Council to support community response and recovery efforts. Flood-related applications will be fast-tracked. More information about Community Response Grants and the online application form can be found at Grant information
• Financial support is also available from the Australian and Queensland governments.
• Residents can do their bit to prevent mosquito outbreaks by ensuring water is cleaned out of roof gutters, rainwater tanks, pot plant bases, buckets, pet bowls, tarpaulins and home sewage treatment plants.
