Harmony Week 2024

Community invited to embrace Harmony Week at Logan Libraries

A Daisy Hill resident will shine a light on her culture this month as the City of Logan celebrates Harmony Week 2024 (March 18-24).

Madhu Khanna will run a workshop on how to create a traditional Hindu lamp, known as a diya, at Logan West Library in Browns Plains on Saturday, March 23 from 10.30am to 11.30am.

The Indian-born special education teacher and artist will help participants create a diya from clay or mud and show how it can be decorated after it has dried.

The lamps lit by Hindus have a cotton wick and are filled with mustard oil during the annual Diwali festival of lights (November 1 this year) and clarified butter (pure ghee) during every day prayer at home and in temples.

Hindus believe a diya dispels darkness.

“It brings light into our life and encourages us to live peacefully,” Mrs Khanna said.

A number of events for adults and children that celebrate the City of Logan’s culturally rich community are planned by Logan Libraries during Harmony Week.

The theme for Harmony Week 2024 is Everyone Belongs.

The Logan District Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Corporation for Elders will present a ‘Yarning with our mob’ story telling session on Saturday, March 23 at Logan Central Library.

Aunty Heather Castledine will discuss reconciliation in the community from 10.30am to noon. Participants can make a friendship bracelet to celebrate the week.

Harmony Week Play and learn sessions and themed Harmony Week story time sessions hosted by First 5 Forever are also planned at multiple libraries.

These fun interactive sessions teach parents how to boost the brain and language development of children aged two and over.

Kids’ Club participants will be able to decorate photo frames during Harmony Week to display drawings or photos.

Bookings are required for each events and can be made via lccqld.com/HarmonyWeek
