Urban Art Strategy endorsed

Urban art paints bright future for city spaces

Some of City of Logan’s most talented residents are set to inspire a new-look urban art scene.

Logan City Council plans for urban art projects to enhance public spaces and busy precincts across the city.

The plan is outlined in Council’s Urban Art Strategy, endorsed at Council’s monthly meeting.

The strategy aims to lift community spirit and improve city spaces through eye-catching and inspirational urban art.

It aims to enhance the city’s activity centres – service hubs which play an important role in the prosperity and liveability of City of Logan.

Installations of many styles and materials could feature in suburbs across the city.

Underpasses and retaining walls could become colourful canvases through the use of murals and artistic lighting installation while footpaths and walkways could be used to engage and entertain pedestrians.

Planning Chair, Councillor Jon Raven, said urban art was a highly visible and effective way to improve public spaces across the city for locals and visitors.

“Urban artworks play an important role in creating places across our city that people want to enjoy spending time in,” he said.

“That not only creates a point of difference for our city but increasing the appeal of popular public spaces often leads to new opportunities for businesses and more jobs for locals.”

The draft Urban Art Strategy was open for public consultation between June 1 and July 1, 2021. More than 200 people viewed the strategy online.

“Council has listened to those who suggested local artists be given priority to showcase their work on the city’s streets,” Cr Raven said.

Council will work with local artists with experience and interest in urban art and involve local and regional curators where possible.

The strategy also encourages investment in urban art projects from the private sector.
