Jianbing lands in Underwood
For Underwood-based restauranteurs Peter and Monica Liu, food is the most meaningful way to experience another culture.
Originally from Northern China, the pair’s most cherished childhood memories often involved quintessential Chinese street food such as the jianbing.
A savoury crepe made with eggs, crunchy fried dough and a multitude of add-ons, this humble breakfast dish is usually purchased through street cart vendors in China.
‘People eat it for breakfast before school and work when it’s really cold – it’s very much a comfort food and that’s a feeling we want to give to diners,’ Monica says.
And that’s exactly what they’ve accomplished with their restaurant, Jian Bing Club.

With the guidance of their franchisor friends in Canada, the food is as authentic as it gets.
With aptly named dishes such as ‘Taste of Childhood Jianbing’, Peter and Monica are passionate about sharing traditional Chinese flavours.
‘We wanted to open a store where we can reach everyone. We’re close to Rochedale and the highway, so we get a mix of people,’ she says.
‘We also get a lot of locals, which is why we created non-traditional versions with ingredients like fried chicken.’
Their ‘Childhood Fried Chicken Fillet Jianbing’ is their best seller.
The restaurant itself further fuels the nostalgia, with décor that mimics the look of traditional street markets in China.
‘Chinese street food culture isn’t as developed here in Australia as it is elsewhere,’ Monica says.
‘We wanted to share something authentic to Australian locals and help homesick international students feel better.’
