Pioneering urban design celebrated

Three innovative urban design projects in the City of Logan featured in the 7th annual Minister’s Award for Urban Design.

The awards, held on 27 July, celebrate projects that exemplify energy efficiency, accessibility, and style, and highlight how urban design can benefit communities.

Logan Village Rail Trail and the Logan Village Green Revitalisation shared the Movement and Place Award.

These projects, delivered by Logan City Council, have repurposed under-used space to create new community connections. They have brought economic and place-making opportunities in Logan Village, and the Village Green space promotes a healthier lifestyle and allows residents to enjoy the area by foot.

Meanwhile, the Kingston social housing project, Habitat on Juers, won the Queensland Government’s highest honor, the Malcolm Middleton Award for Outstanding Liveable Design.

The project was commended for its mix of simplicity, adaptability, and excellence in the areas of energy efficiency and accessibility. Each of its 16 units achieved an average 8.5 star energy efficiency rating.

Minister for Energy and Public Works Mick de Brenni says Queensland is setting the standard for the rest of the nation.

‘The award proves that modern housing can be accessible, efficient and affordable with the application of thoughtful design,’ he says.

Queensland Government Architect Leah Lang says good design leaves a lasting legacy.

‘These will be the projects that foster great pride for future generations of Queenslanders,’ she says.

‘They will add value to the unique Queensland lifestyle that we all know and love.’
