The secret to a happy life: volunteering
Carole Willson, who describes herself as ‘a little wretch’, has been making the most of her life by making others smile.
She became a member of the Logan East Community Neighbourhood Association (LECNA) almost a decade ago while on a career break, helping with donations over Christmas.
Now retired, she devotes much of her time to the community and has recently been recognised as a joint winner of the Volunteer of the Year Frank Lenz Memorial Award along with the secretary of the Rotary Club of Beenleigh, John Mulraney.
‘It was unbelievable and overwhelming, and I accepted that trophy on behalf of everyone else at the centre,’ Carole says.
‘We’ve all had a few very bad years and this award is like a light at the end of the tunnel.
‘It gives us the motivation to get back on the horse – it’s honestly just beautiful. We’ve also got new management who are absolutely delightful, and the centre is very different and very wonderful now.’
You’ll often find her tending to the community garden for plant sales, which is one of the association’s biggest fundraisers.
Otherwise, you might spot Carole in the centre, cleaning and sorting donations to sell at her kiosk, which is often bustling with activity.
‘I have a little stall set up in the function room and people come to donate and purchase things,’ she says.
‘It’s for fundraising but also very social, because we do have a lot of older people in Springwood and it’s lovely to see them come out and do crafts.’
Beyond fundraising, LECNA volunteers – who Carole describe as the most genuine, giving, and caring bunch – also help with NILS loans, mediation, referrals and more.
The year is looking busier than ever with upcoming fundraising events like Market Day and even a fashion parade.
Anyone and everyone can support the group’s efforts, whether it’s by donating staple foods or participating in activities like card-making or bingo.
For Carole, the best part of volunteering is being able to make someone else’s day a little brighter.
‘I plan to keep doing the best I can and feeling useful – that’s really important,’ she says.
‘I love Logan. I’ve been here since 1972… it is so nice to be retired and get to know the people.
‘There are so many beautiful people here – it’s just a really nice place to live.’
