Safe pathway to P-plate success

PCYC’s Braking the Cycle program has helped many young people log the hours required to get their licence since launching in September 2020 – and it’s largely thanks to the volunteer supervisors.

Getting a driver’s licence means young learners need to log 100 hours of practical experience, but financial and social challenges can often be a barrier.

The City of Logan’s next generation of motorists are being given a helping hand by Braking the Cycle

and Coordinator Carmel Kneepkens, says demand has been high.

“Interest has been growing and growing,” Carmel says.

With that high demand comes a need for volunteer supervisors – and Carmel says new mentors are always welcome.

“Every hour we get from a volunteer, we are grateful for,” she says.

“We have volunteers who are financial advisors, nurses, teachers, mums and police, and they give whatever time they can.

“All we ask is that volunteers give a minimum of one hour a week to help get our local young people on the road safely and with the necessary skills.”

P-plater Jessie Luscombe, 17, says Braking the Cycle helped get her licence.

She did approximately 60 hours after paid driving lessons became too expensive.

“I took whatever times I could book in for,” Jessie says.

“They all taught me a range of skills.”

Learner drivers wanting to log hours through Braking the Cycle must have already undertaken 10 hours of driving. Driver mentors need to have held an open licence for a minimum of 12 months and have, or be willing to obtain, a Blue Card (PCYC Queensland can help volunteers get a Blue Card at no cost).
