Taking a step towards better mental health

The success of an innovative mental health program may have cracked the code to better wellbeing – and it’s literally a walk in the park.

What’s different is that the Walk and Talk for Wellness organisation pairs each participant with a qualified counsellor or counsellor –in-training for these walks.

Each session, which is subsidised by Logan City Council’s Active and Healthy program and costs only $5, is based on the participant’s needs and goals.

Walk and Talk for Wellness, founded by Richard O’Connor, embraces the well-established link between nature, health, and wellbeing.

‘Having been in the fitness industry in South East Queensland since 1991, I’ve always had an affinity for movement and nature,’ he says.

‘Commencing my counselling degree was the magic piece that really inspired me to begin developing the basic foundation for the program.

‘I’ve been supported throughout the process by co-founder Dr Debra Bath and it’s been an amazing journey – and it’s only just beginning.’

The response so far has been overwhelmingly positive.

Being in nature, rather than in a traditional clinical setting, helps participants feel more comfortable sharing their thoughts.

Many have reported feeling less anxious because of how calming the outdoors is.

‘I find that the gentle movement of walking invites you to not only take in those beautiful things in nature, but also to maintain that connection to someone else in a deeper way,’ Richard says.

‘We know that movement facilitates cognitive function – it’s one of those things that really helps people connect and communicate.’

Most importantly, participants feel heard and supported at the time they need it, while most mental health providers have waiting times of 12 or more weeks.

‘People come back for the connection because the walking is secondary to the overall experience of having someone listen to you,’ he says.

‘We’re also biologically drawn to being in nature because that’s what sustains us, in terms of evolutionary traits.’

Walk and Talk sessions are held every Friday at 9 am and 10 am in Underwood Park.

Richard, who has found purpose in giving back and feeling deeply connected to the community, hopes the program will continue to expand to help more people.

‘There is so much more to achieve, and so much more support we are hoping to provide for the Logan community,’ he says.
