New lights a home-run hit

The Southern Stars Baseball Club is shining brighter this season thanks to a lighting upgrade at its home ground, which is located in Regents Park.

A new light tower has been erected while additional light fittings have been added to existing poles.

The upgrade at Regency Park was made possible through Logan City Council’s Sports Facility Program and funding from the Division 7 Local Infrastructure Program.

Division 7 Councillor Tim Frazer says the new lights allow club members to utilise more of their home ground for games and training.

‘The upgraded lighting has illuminated the entire outfield and has also removed the need to erect temporary homerun fences closer in during night games,’ Cr Frazer says.

Southern Stars Baseball Club fields teams in men’s, women’s, juniors and masters competitions.

Membership has increased this year to 120 players.

Club officials say the extra lighting is another improvement that helps justify their belief that Southern Stars is the ‘best little baseball club in the region’.

‘The support that we constantly receive from Council is much appreciated and certainly helps our major goal of providing the local community with a safe and enjoyable sport for all ages,’ Rick Waterworth says, in his role as club treasurer and life member.

Pitcher Storm Law, who has been with the Stars for 16 years and lives nearby in Regents Park, says the new lighting has been welcomed by players at all levels and launched a new era for the club.

‘It’s way better. We can see the ball now when training at night,’ Storm jokes.
